What a free live chat widget can do for your business
A chat button on your website does one simple thing: it lets a visitor ask a question at the moment they are thinking about buying. Forms wait for someone to get round to them. Phone numbers put people off after hours. Email feels slow. A chat window answers in seconds, and the visitor stays on your page instead of going back to the search results.
The value is different for every kind of business, but the pattern is the same. Someone arrives, has one question standing between them and the next step, and either gets an answer or leaves. A free chat widget with an AI assistant answers most of those questions immediately, and hands the rest to your team with the visitor's details already captured.
- Online shops: delivery areas and times, sizes, stock, returns and order questions — answered from your own policies, day and night.
- Service businesses and agencies: fewer enquiries, but each one can be a large project. The chat captures who they are and what they need, and alerts you straight away.
- Software and B2B companies: demo requests, pricing for a team size, and technical questions. The AI can ask your qualification questions and write the answers onto the lead.
- Clinics, salons, repair shops and other local businesses: opening hours, prices and bookings — the questions people ask in the evening, when nobody is at the front desk.
How the AI assistant learns your business
The assistant is only as useful as what it knows, so Vedain gives you three quick ways to teach it. You can point it at your website, and it reads your homepage plus up to eight key pages such as pricing, FAQ, help and policies, then drafts a knowledge document for you to review. You can upload documents — a price list, a brochure, an FAQ — as PDF, Word, text or markdown files. And you can simply type what it should know, in your own words.
Whatever you add goes into one knowledge box that you can read and edit before saving. The assistant answers only from that content. When a visitor asks something it does not cover, it says it is not sure and offers to connect them with your team, rather than inventing a price or a policy. Those questions are collected in a list, most-asked first, so you always know what to add next.
You can also give the AI up to five action buttons, such as “Book a demo” linked to your calendar, and up to five starter questions that appear when the chat opens. Both help visitors get to the answer they came for without typing.
What happens after your trial — exactly
Every Vedain account starts with a 14-day trial of everything, with no card needed. It is worth being precise about what happens when those 14 days end, because “free” means different things to different companies.
Your chat widget stays on your website and keeps working. The AI assistant keeps answering visitors, up to 100 conversations a month. Every chat where the visitor gives an email address is saved as a lead in your account. And because you cannot reply from the Vedain inbox without a plan, each new chat is emailed to you — to the chat alert addresses you set, or to your admins — with the visitor's first message and their email address, so you can reply from your own inbox.
When you want to reply live in the chat window, have unlimited AI answers and use the rest of the CRM, you pick a plan: $10 (₹500, AED 25) a month for each person who works in the CRM, while teammates who only answer chats and support tickets take agent seats, three of them free and then $5 (₹200, AED 15) each a month. Your chats, leads and settings are all kept, so nothing needs to be set up again.
- Free forever: the widget on every page, AI answers for 100 conversations a month, chats saved as leads, each new chat emailed to you.
- With a plan: live replies from the Vedain inbox, unlimited AI answers with no per-resolution fees, hand-off alerts and escalation, routing, analytics and the full CRM.
- If the monthly AI allowance runs out, new visitors get a short message that the team will reply by email, and are asked for their address if they have not given it.
How Vedain's free chat compares
Several chat tools have free options, and each is built differently. The table below uses the vendors' own pricing pages, checked in September 2026. Prices and limits change often, so check the current page before you decide.
| Tool | Free option | AI on the free option | Where the leads go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vedain | Widget stays free after the 14-day trial | AI answers 100 conversations a month | Saved as leads in the Vedain CRM |
| tawk.to | Free forever, unlimited agents; tawk.to branding | AI Assist is a paid add-on from $29 a month | A free contacts list inside tawk.to |
| Tidio | Free plan, 50 conversations a month; Tidio branding | 50 Lyro AI conversations once per account | A contacts list; a CRM through integrations |
| Zoho SalesIQ | Free plan, 3 operators and 100 chat sessions a month | Your own AI key on paid plans | Zoho CRM, a separate subscription |
If you need many agents answering support questions on a zero budget, a free-forever tool with unlimited agents is hard to beat. Vedain's free widget suits a different goal: turning website conversations into leads you follow up, in the same place as the rest of your sales.
Getting the most from a free chat widget
A chat widget is quick to install, but a few decisions make the difference between a button nobody uses and a steady source of leads.
- Write a greeting that invites a question. “Hi! Questions about delivery or pricing? Ask here” gets more replies than “How can we help?”.
- Add starter questions for the three things people ask most. They remove the blank-box problem.
- Teach the AI your prices and policies word for word. Visitors ask about money and returns more than anything else.
- Decide what happens when someone wants a person. Set business hours and who is alerted, and let the AI collect an email after hours.
- Keep email required on the pre-chat form if you want every chat to become a lead from the first message; make it optional if you want less friction, and the chat still becomes a lead when the visitor types an address.
- Check the questions your AI could not answer once a week and add the answers. Each one removes a future hand-off.
- Open the widget on your phone. It opens full screen on mobile, and that is where many of your visitors will see it.
Privacy and page speed
A chat widget runs on your website and handles personal details, so it should respect both your visitors and your page speed. Vedain's widget loads asynchronously, so it does not hold up your page. Its font is served by Vedain, so no request goes to Google Fonts or any other third party from your site.
The chat form links to your own privacy policy. If your site needs consent before storing anything in the browser, cookie-consent mode stores nothing until the visitor opens the chat themselves. You can also choose to delete closed chats and their attachments automatically after 30, 90 or 180 days, or a year; the lead keeps a record that a chat happened, without the conversation.
Installing on your website
You add the widget with one line of code, pasted just before the closing body tag of your site. There are step-by-step guides for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow and other platforms, and a WordPress plugin where you simply paste your widget key. Once a page with the widget has been opened, the Setup Assistant shows that your chat is live and on which website, so you are never left wondering whether it worked.
Developers can control the widget from their own code: open or close it, and pre-fill the visitor's name and email for signed-in customers. Chat events — started, resolved and missed — can be sent to other tools such as Zapier through webhooks.
Live chat, contact forms, email or phone?
Most websites already have a contact form and an email address, so it is fair to ask what chat adds. The short answer is speed and context. A form is a one-way message that waits in an inbox; the visitor has usually left your site by the time anyone reads it. Email is familiar but slow for a simple question. A phone number works well for urgent or complex matters, but only when someone is there to pick up, and many people prefer not to call.
Chat sits between them. It answers simple questions instantly, it works when your office is closed because the AI keeps answering, and it captures the conversation and the visitor's details in one place when a person needs to follow up. For most businesses the best set-up keeps all of these channels and lets chat take the first, quick questions.
- Keep your contact form for detailed requests that need attachments or careful wording.
- Keep a phone number for urgent issues and for customers who prefer to talk.
- Use chat for the quick questions that decide whether someone buys today — price, delivery, availability — and to capture the lead when they want more.
