What the Fin rename and the Salesforce deal mean for Intercom customers
In 2026 the company behind Intercom went through two big changes in quick succession. On 12 May it renamed itself Fin, after its AI agent. On 15 June Salesforce agreed to acquire it for around $3.6 billion, and the deal closed on 10 September 2026. Fin now sits within Salesforce AI Labs. Salesforce says Fin will continue to serve its customers, and nothing in the public record suggests existing accounts will stop working. For most teams, the day-to-day product looks the same today as it did before the announcement.
Even so, a change of owner is a sensible moment to step back and look at your chat set-up with fresh eyes. Contracts come up for renewal, pricing pages get revised and product roadmaps are reset under new leadership. None of that is a reason to panic, but it is a reason to check what you are paying for, what you actually use and whether the tool still fits the size and shape of your team. If you are a small or mid-sized business using Intercom mainly to talk to website visitors and win new customers, it is worth asking whether a support platform is the right home for that work.
A support platform or a sales CRM with chat built in?
Intercom is a mature, powerful customer service platform, built for support teams that handle a high volume of conversations, need advanced routing and workflow automation, and connect to a large ecosystem of apps. Reviewers regularly mention the depth of its tooling, and a large support organisation may well be happy to stay. Many smaller businesses, though, add a chat widget to win customers, not to run a help desk. Intercom stores contacts and companies but has no sales pipeline, so deals usually sit in a separate CRM connected by an integration: two subscriptions, a sync to maintain and a gap where information can drop.
Vedain takes the opposite approach. It is a CRM first, with leads, contacts, accounts, deals and pipeline, email inbox sync for Gmail and Outlook, campaigns, workflows and reports, and website live chat and an AI assistant are part of the same product. A chat does not need to be copied anywhere, because it already lives on the lead's record. The trade-off is that Vedain is newer and smaller than Intercom, has no large app marketplace and does not offer the same depth of help-desk automation. It suits teams that care most about sales follow-up rather than large-scale support operations.
How per-outcome AI pricing adds up
Fin, the AI agent inside Intercom, is priced at $0.99 per outcome on Intercom's pricing page in September 2026. Lead qualification is listed at $9.99 each, and Copilot, the assistant for human agents, at $29 to $35 per agent a month. Per-outcome pricing means you pay for results rather than capacity, but your bill moves with your traffic, which makes budgeting harder when volume swings. The worked example below uses only the $0.99 price and ignores seats and add-ons. How an outcome is counted is set out in Intercom's own terms, so check your contract for the exact definition.
| AI outcomes in a month | Calculation | Fin AI cost for the month |
|---|---|---|
| 300 | 300 × $0.99 | $297 |
| 1,000 | 1,000 × $0.99 | $990 |
In Vedain, AI answers are included in every plan, for full CRM seats and agent seats alike. There are no per-resolution or per-conversation AI fees, so a campaign that doubles your website traffic does not double your AI bill. The assistant learns from your website, uploaded documents and text you type in, answers only from that knowledge, and says when it is not sure rather than inventing prices or policies. It is a simpler tool than Fin, and it does not include a no-code chatbot flow builder for the website widget, but the cost is predictable.
Seat pricing for a team of 3 and a team of 10
Seat prices matter just as much as AI fees. At September 2026 list prices, Intercom charges $29 per seat a month on Essential, $99 on Advanced and $139 on Expert when billed monthly. Annual billing is lower on Advanced ($85) and Expert ($132). Vedain costs $10 per user a month (₹500 or AED 25) for anyone who works in the CRM, with live chat and AI answers included. People who only answer chats and support tickets take agent seats instead: each CRM seat comes with one free agent seat, up to three per workspace, and each further agent costs $5 (₹200 or AED 15) a month. A workspace always has at least one admin on a full seat. The table below uses monthly list prices, shows Vedain both ways, and leaves out Fin AI outcomes, which are billed on top.
| Plan (monthly billing) | 3 people | 10 people |
|---|---|---|
| Vedain, 1 admin at $10 + chat-only agents (1 free with the admin's seat, then $5) | $10 + 1 free + 1 × $5 = $15 | $10 + 1 free + 8 × $5 = $50 |
| Vedain, everyone on a full CRM seat at $10 | 3 × $10 = $30 | 10 × $10 = $100 |
| Intercom Essential, $29 per seat | 3 × $29 = $87 | 10 × $29 = $290 |
| Intercom Advanced, $99 per seat | 3 × $99 = $297 | 10 × $99 = $990 |
| Intercom Expert, $139 per seat | 3 × $139 = $417 | 10 × $139 = $1,390 |
To see a fuller picture, add the AI cost from the previous section. A three-person team on Advanced handling 300 AI outcomes would pay $297 for seats plus $297 for Fin, or $594 a month, before any lead qualification or Copilot charges. The same team on Vedain would pay $10 if one admin runs the account and the other two only answer chats and tickets, or $30 if all three also work leads and deals in the CRM. The comparison is not like for like, because Intercom's higher tiers include help-desk features Vedain does not have, but it shows why smaller teams often look again at their chat tool when the invoice arrives. Indian customers paying in rupees should note that GST applies to Vedain's Indian billing.
From chat to lead without copying anything
In Vedain, a lead is created as soon as a visitor gives an email address, either in the pre-chat form or typed into the conversation. A name is optional. If the email already belongs to an existing lead or contact, Vedain matches it instead of creating a duplicate. The lead's source is recorded as Chat Widget, so you can report on how many enquiries the website brings in, and each chat appears on the lead's Activity timeline, updated when it is resolved or missed.
The AI assistant can also ask up to five qualifying questions that you choose, such as company, team size, use case, timeline or budget, and it asks them naturally during the chat rather than as a form. The answers are written straight onto the lead. From there the lead can move into your pipeline, receive an email campaign or trigger a workflow, all in the same system, and a chat that needs longer follow-up can become a Support Desk ticket with its transcript attached. For teams that currently export Intercom conversations to another CRM or rely on an integration to sync them, this removes a step that is easy to get wrong.
Hand-off alerts and working hours
An AI assistant is only as good as the hand-off behind it. In Vedain, the AI passes the conversation to a person when a visitor asks for one, using phrases such as "talk to a human" plus any custom phrases you add, or when it cannot help. The assigned agent, the round-robin pool or the admins are alerted immediately, and the chat alert email addresses receive a notification as well. If nobody replies within five minutes, admins and managers are alerted. A chat left unanswered for 30 minutes is marked as missed, so it shows up for follow-up rather than disappearing.
You can set business hours with a timezone and working days. Outside those hours the AI keeps answering by default, never promises a live reply, and asks visitors who want a person for their email address. The team then gets one follow-up alert per chat. One honest limit: Vedain has no native mobile app for agents, so replies are sent from a browser, and there is no Instagram or Messenger inbox yet.
Setting up Vedain and moving across from Intercom
Installing Vedain's chat widget takes one line of asynchronous script. There is a WordPress plugin, and step-by-step guides for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow and other site builders. The Setup Assistant confirms when the widget is live on your site. You can set your logo, colour, greeting, launcher text and position, and configure a pre-chat form with name, email, phone and one custom question. On phones the widget opens full screen. For the AI, choose "Generate from website" to read your homepage and up to eight key pages, then add documents or typed notes. Signed webhooks for chat started, resolved and missed can feed Zapier or your own systems.
A step-by-step migration plan
- Start the 14-day free trial; no card is needed and every feature is included.
- Import your leads and contacts so returning visitors are matched by email.
- Build the AI's knowledge from your website, then upload help documents (PDF, Word, .txt or .md, up to 7.5 MB).
- Recreate your most-used replies as canned replies, inserted with "/" or the lightning button.
- Set business hours, routing, alert addresses and qualifying questions.
- Test the widget and hand-off on one page, then replace the Intercom script site-wide before your notice period ends.
A checklist for reviewing your chat tool
Whether you stay with Intercom, move to Vedain or choose something else, review your chat tool against a short, practical list, and judge it on what your team needs this year rather than on the longest feature list. Work through the questions with the people who answer chats every day. If the answers point to a busy support operation with complex workflows, Intercom remains a capable choice. If they point to a small team that wants every website conversation to feed its sales pipeline at a predictable price, Vedain is worth trying alongside it.
- Cost: what did seats, AI and add-ons cost last month, and how much did that vary?
- Purpose: are most chats sales enquiries or support requests?
- Lead capture: does every chat with an email become a lead, with its source recorded, without manual work?
- Hand-off: how quickly is a person alerted when the AI cannot help, and what happens to unanswered chats?
- AI accuracy: can you see the questions the AI could not answer, and rate its replies?
- Privacy: can you link your own privacy policy, use cookie-consent mode and delete old chats on a schedule?
- Fit: do you need a native mobile app, social inboxes or a large app marketplace? Vedain does not offer these today.
